Sophiatown is different from other plays in that it was written by a group of people – The Junction Avenue Theatre Company (JATC) – consisting of white students and academics, including Malcolm Purkey. Later, the company included black actors. Sophiatown tells the story of how, in 1897, Hermann Tobiansky bought part of the farm Waterval to be developed into a suburb for white people. When the suburb was established in 1904, black people bought properties there; the legislation preventing black people buying properties only came into being in 1913. The suburb was originally called Sophia, after Tobiansky’s wife. In 1919, it was renamed to Sophiatown. By the 1920s, the white people had moved out, and after 1913, the black people, losing their farms and smallholdings, flooded to the large cities. Sophiatown’s water and sanitation facilities could not cope and, in 1940, Sophiatown became an overcrowded, poverty-stricken township. In the 1950s, neighbouring white suburbs were expanding and their residents demanded that the government extend their suburbs into Sophiatown. Soon thereafter, the government ordered the removal of the black people from Sophiatown. Despite an organised show of resistance by the Sophiatown residents in 1955, 80 bulldozers and 2 000 armed policemen were sent in and the houses of Sophiatown destroyed.
